I think we can all agree that climate change can be a tricky topic! But if there’s one thing that unites us, it’s the thought of finding ways of averting and tackling the climate crisis. Whilst it is the responsibility of large corporations and the government to make major changes, there’s actually a handful of things we can do that will help fight the crisis.
The time is now for us to start making a change instead of waiting for another group to take the lead. Recent research has found that everyday civilians and communities are growing to become more and more concerned about the topic and have already started working towards making a difference. Whilst it is true that the government has a primary influence, citizens contribute 25%-27% towards the overall influence in fighting the crisis.
A people-led movement named the JUMP campaign published some research earlier this year which outlines some of the best things we can start doing. If you’re feeling lost about how you can make a difference, the JUMP campaign’s six “shifts” will restore your hope:
Conscious Clothing
Ask yourself, how many outfits do you really need? The recommendation is to buy only three new items of clothing per year. This will deliver six percent of the total savings needed by 2030! Instead of buying new clothes, consider getting clothes repaired.
Holiday local
Instead of the many foreign trips a year, consider a short-haul flight once every three years and a long-haul flight every eight years. What’s more, opt for low-carbon forms of transportation which will lower emissions by two percent a year.
End Clutter
We live in a time where buying a new iPhone every year has become a way of life. The JUMP campaign recommends rethinking this and instead keeping electrical products for a minimum of seven years. To help with this, a charity called Restart Project has taken the lead and repairs broken electronics and only asks for what you can pay.
Travel Fresh
Just like your phone, it’s worthwhile to keep hold of your car for longer. Ideally, the JUMP campaign recommends getting rid of your vehicle, but if that’s not possible, keep it longer. This could help deliver 2% of the total savings needed by 2030.
Change The System
This is your moment to make that change and nudge the system that dominates us all! Consider moving to green energy, changing your pension supplier or insulating your home. This will eventually influence larger corporations and the government which will nudge them to start making changes!
