Nestled in the Northwest of England with stunning views of the Irish Sea, Blackpool has long been the go-to destination in Lancashire for thrill-seekers, with the iconic Blackpool Pleasure Beach and the exhilarating Pepsi Max ride at the forefront. Despite facing challenges due to the impact of Covid-19 on seafront hotels, Blackpool continues to hold its place as a beloved seaside escape in the UK. The anticipation surrounding the upcoming launch of a new university campus has only added to the town’s appeal.
Blackpool stands out as the only British town with three piers, dating back to the completion of the North Pier in 1863, which quickly became a hub for tourists. The town stretches to the south shore, leading to the South Pier and the famous Golden Mile. The Winter Gardens complex, home to the Opera House, continues to host performances, along with iconic landmarks like the Blackpool Tower and Pleasure Beach.
The Blackpool Tower stands tall as one of Britain’s most cherished landmarks, captivating visitors with its grandeur. The renowned Blackpool Illuminations, boasting over 500 captivating designs and features, have solidified their place as one of the UK’s most beloved tourist attractions.
This year, the highly anticipated Blackpool Illuminations switch on event will be held in the Autumnmarking one of the most dazzling nights in Blackpool’s event schedule. Drawing in approximately 3.5 million visitors each year, this grand annual spectacle features a stunning display of lights that spans six miles along the coastline. With a history dating back over a century, the world-renowned illuminations truly light up the night sky when the switch is flipped, illuminating over a million twinkling bulbs that create a magical and enchanting atmosphere.
In addition to the illuminations, Blackpool hosts the World Fireworks Championship annually in early September, a must-see event for all. For those seeking a more tranquil and picturesque setting, there are stone statues scattered throughout the borders and charming fountains in the Italian Gardens. Explore the peaceful pathways that lead to secluded corners, or cross the elegant bridges that span across the lake at Stanley Gardens. Enjoy the serene beauty and lush surroundings of these tranquil gardens in the heart of Blackpool.
The Tramway Project Underway and Holiday Inn Hotel
A significant project worth £22 million is currently in progress in Blackpool, involving the expansion of the tramway system to provide a direct route for commuters and shoppers from Blackpool North station to various destinations across town via the Promenade. This project includes the construction of a new terminal, the opening of The Holiday Inn hotel, and the recently launched Marco Pierre White restaurant. Additionally, there are several office and retail spaces available for lease as part of this development.
Having had the opportunity to stay at the newly opened Holiday Inn hotel, I found it to be conveniently located just a short walk away from the seafront and town centre. The hotel, boasting a 4-star rating, is gaining popularity among both business travellers and vacationers seeking a relaxing staycation experience. During my stay in a Junior suite, I appreciated the comfortable double bed, spacious corner suite, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, luxurious shower room, and fluffy white towels provided.
The Holiday Inn offers a range of amenities and essential comforts in a clean and modern environment, ensuring that guests are well taken care of and their needs are met. With Marco Pierre White’s restaurant located on the ground floor of the hotel, guests can enjoy a sophisticated dining experience for either a business lunch or a leisurely dinner.
The setting at Marco’s Italian restaurant offers a modern twist compared to the typical seafront dining spots. Dining there in the evening allows you to enjoy your meal in a stylish environment. Xavier, my waiter, quickly became my favourite due to his exceptional service and expert pizza-cutting skills. He suggested some delicious bruschetta and proceeded to recommend various pasta dishes and pizzas for us to try. I decided on the cannelloni pasta, a margarita pizza, and a refreshing Rhubarb Lemonade Iced Mocktail to quench my thirst on a hot afternoon.
The breath-taking view of the seafront and pier from my hotel room kept me captivated, making it feel more like a fun business trip rather than a work assignment. I found it challenging to stay focused on work with so many tempting distractions around me, such as strolls on the beach at sunset or thrilling rides at the amusement park. The excitement of purchasing rocks and candy from the sweetshop further distracted me from my work.
The year 2024 promises to be a year full of excitement, with the opening of the new Showtown Museum and IMAX cinema. Additionally, the popular Elmer Parade is scheduled to take place throughout June.
