Our stay at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo Sri Lanka surpassed all expectations, providing a remarkable introduction to Sri Lankan hospitality. This luxury, family-friendly hotel seamlessly blends comfort with elegance, catering to diverse tastes with its extensive range of amenities, dining experiences and services.
Nestled along the serene banks of Beira Lake, originally constructed by the Portuguese to protect Colombo from local kings and other enemies, Cinnamon Lakeside offers a peaceful retreat just a 10-minute drive from Crescat Boulevard Shopping Mall. This sophisticated oasis features a large outdoor pool, a health club, an art store, a pool table, and live entertainment on select nights, ensuring a delightful experience for every guest.
We stayed in a high-quality, garden-facing room with a balcony, offering modern, spacious, and stylish accommodations equipped with flat-screen TVs, a safe, and the usual tea and coffee-making facilities. The room’s design and amenities struck a perfect balance between comfort and space.
Culinary options at Cinnamon Lakeside are diverse, I’m a real foodie and they were featuring a mix of Continental, Sri Lankan, Asian, and American cuisines, all prepared in a halal-serving kitchen. The food was exceptional, and the Ramadan Buffet was particularly noteworthy, tempting us to go back for seconds. For those eager to explore different flavours, the on-site Thai and Japanese restaurants are a must-visit. The hotel’s cleanliness, excellent service, and robust security further enhanced our stay, making us feel both pampered and safe.
With room prices start from £135 per night, Cinnamon Lakeside offers exceptional value for a luxury experience. Our overall rating is a commendable 8.9/10, solidifying it as one of our favourite destinations for a relaxing getaway in Colombo. What’s more, your in the heart of the location which means as soon as you step off the grounds, there is lots to see and do.
During our two-night stay at Cinnamon Lakeside, we booked an exhilarating Colombo City Tour via an open-deck sightseeing service, allowing us to explore both the historic and contemporary sides of the city. Our tour began with a visit to the prison cell of the last Sri Lankan king, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha who was the last of four kings to rule the last Sinhalese monarchy of the Kingdom of Kandy in Sri Lanka. I must say, the prison looked tiny!
We then went on to see the iconic lighthouse where a clock tower was designed by Lady Ward, which predates London’s Big Ben.
We marvelled at the Old Town Hall and the stunning Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque) located in the bustling Pettah market area. It’s a beautiful mosque with its Indo-Saracenic and Neo-classical styles, is the most artistic, colourful, and compact mosque I have ever visited. The mosque was built in 1908 and expanded in 1975 to accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers, and stands as a testament to Colombo’s rich history and architectural heritage.
The tour continued with views of the Colombo Harbour and the southern expansion of the port city. We admired the remnants of British colonial architecture along York Street and the historic Fort Railway Station, a major rail hub in Colombo. The impressive 1,153-foot Lotus Tower, known as the Pearl of Asia, is the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia and the tallest skyscraper in Sri Lanka, offering a new perspective on the city’s skyline.
Our Colombo City Tour provided a comprehensive and captivating glimpse into the vibrant history and modern advancements of Sri Lanka’s capital, making our stay at Cinnamon Lakeside even more memorable. Other notable sites included the Dutch Hospital, a beautifully restored Dutch-era structure now home to cafes, shops, and restaurants, and Galle Face Green, a long open space traditionally facing the beach and sea, perfect for a leisurely stroll while enjoying fresh coconut water and watching locals fly kites and picnic with their families.
