Morning Adhkar (remembrances or supplications) for Muslims are a collection of du’as (prayers) and dhikr (remembrances of Allah) that are recited after Fajr prayer or in the early morning, typically before noon. They are an essential part of a Muslim’s spiritual routine, meant to bring blessings, protection, and peace throughout the day.
Here’s an overview of what is commonly involved in the morning Adhkar:
1. Reciting Specific Verses from the Qur’an
- Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255): This verse is often recited as part of the morning Adhkar for protection and blessings.
- Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Al-Falaq (113), and An-Nas (114): These three short Surahs (known as the “Three Quls”) are typically recited three times in the morning for seeking refuge from harm, evil, and protection from the devil.
2. Praising and Glorifying Allah (Dhikr)
Muslims engage in praising and remembering Allah by repeating phrases that glorify Him. Some of the common dhikr include:
- “Subhanallah wa bihamdihi” (Glory be to Allah and praise to Him) – recited 100 times in the morning.
- “La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer”
(There is no deity except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs sovereignty, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things omnipotent) – recited 100 times. - “Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar” (Glory be to Allah, Praise be to Allah, Allah is the Greatest) – typically recited 33 times each.
3. Seeking Forgiveness and Mercy
- “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness from Allah) – This phrase is repeated to ask for Allah’s forgiveness.
- “Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman naafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan”
(O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds) – a morning du’a to start the day with the intention of seeking beneficial outcomes.
4. Invoking Blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
Muslims often send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by reciting “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad”. This is a way to show love for the Prophet and earn rewards.
5. Supplications for Protection
Several supplications are made in the morning to seek Allah’s protection from harm, evil, and difficulties for the day ahead. Examples include:
- “Bismillah alladhi la yadurru ma’asmihi shay’un fi al-ardi wa la fi al-sama’ wa huwa al-sami’ al-‘alim”
(In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing) – recited three times for protection. - “Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabbul-‘Arshil-‘Azim”
(Allah is sufficient for me; there is no deity except Him. Upon Him, I have relied, and He is the Lord of the mighty throne) – recited seven times.
6. Gratitude and Acknowledgment of Allah’s Favor
- “Alhamdulillah allathee ahyaana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhi al-nushoor”
(Praise be to Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection) – recited upon waking up to express gratitude for being given another day.
7. Short Du’as for Specific Needs
Morning Adhkar can also include personalized supplications for health, wealth, guidance, or the wellbeing of loved ones. For example:
- “Allahumma ‘afini fi badani, Allahumma ‘afini fi sam’i, Allahumma ‘afini fi basari”
(O Allah, grant health to my body, O Allah, grant health to my hearing, O Allah, grant health to my sight).
Purpose and Benefits:
- Spiritual Protection: It helps protect the individual from harm, evil, and the influence of Shaytan (Satan) throughout the day.
- Increased Barakah (Blessings): It invites blessings into one’s life by starting the day in remembrance of Allah.
- Calmness and Peace: Regularly engaging in Adhkar brings a sense of peace, reduces anxiety, and strengthens one’s connection with Allah.
Morning Adhkar is highly encouraged in the Sunnah (teachings of the Prophet) and is considered a beautiful way to start the day with mindfulness and devotion.
