Hometown – I grew up in the London borough of
Hackney.
Schooling – I went to an Islamic boarding school in Leicester from the age of 11, up to the age of 16 (by choice), where I memorised the Holy Quran and completed my GCSE’s.
Upbringing – I
was relatively quiet growing up, particularly
introverted – I like to think I still am. A mummy’s boy. Strange,
given that I spent most of my time away from home, away from my family. During
the five years at the Islamic school, I was often homesick, and would spend a
lot of time on the phone, whenever possible, catching up with my mum. To divert
my mind from home I played a number of competitive sports such as football,
cricket, badminton, table tennis and pool, I would find myself partaking
energetically as a release, and to take away the pain of being away from
family. I missed home and didn’t have many
friends. Having said that, as the years went by I formed good
relationships with a few close, studious pals, who I
am still in contact with; friends who will travel the extra mile when need be.
I was fortunate enough, though, to visit Mecca and Madina in KSA a few times during my summer vacations from boarding school; it was my parents’ way of rewarding my efforts and accomplishments: This made me a goal-orientated, determined, focused individual, the person that I have become.
