Summer is fast approaching and it’s a time when many of us will be spending a lot more time outdoors. Whilst skincare is of utmost importance to us when faced with sunny weather, food on the other hand is something that gets overlooked.

To enjoy summer responsibly, it’s worth rethinking what your diet will look like throughout the summer months. Certain foods can indeed make you feel worse whilst others will keep you going, even if you’re faced with another heatwave!

Let’s dive right in and take a look at some of the best foods and drinks to have in the summer months:

Water

This one is obvious and a no-brainer! It’s a good idea to get this one out of the way before we dive into all the good stuff! Stay hydrated as often as possible as your body will be losing more fluids throughout the heat of the summer. To avoid dizziness and tiredness, keep that water bottle within close reach!

Melons and Watermelons

If you’re after something that will keep you healthy, hydrated and taste juicy, melons and watermelons are the way to go! Not only are they delicious, but they are also perfect for the entire family, including the babies! What’s more, with watermelon possessing a nutrient called lycopene, consuming it will help in relieving you from sun exposure. In fact, many fruits and veg that are red have lycopene, so don’t be worried about eating papaya, guava and pink grapefruit in the summer too! If you don’t want to eat them by themselves, throw them in a blender along with a few other fruits and yoghurt, and make yourself a nice and cold smoothie!

Salads

Did you know that vegetables are made up of 95% water? It’s true! Vegetables such as lettuce, celery, radishes and cabbage have a high level of water within them, which is why it counts as one of the best sides in the summer. What’s more, with high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and fibres, vegetables can also help improve your heart condition. Be sure to add courgettes to your diet this summer which is known to contain a lot of water!

Tea

Contrary to popular belief, tea can help cool you down. Your instant reaction to heat may be to reach out for a cold drink, but tea will help a lot more in cooling you down. Not only does it help regulate our body temperatures, but tea also will help digest your food and keep your immune system strong.

Fresh Fruits

Aside from watermelons and melons, there are some other great fruits out there that will help you in maintaining a healthy lifestyle in the summer. You could go for citrus fruits such as pineapples, lemon and strawberries which are all filled with vitamins that are beneficial for your body. Not only do these vitamins help with handling the heat, but they will also improve your immunity and keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Corn

Who doesn’t love corn in the summer? Made in a variety of ways, sweet corn is not only rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals, it also possesses certain antioxidants which will help in protecting your skin against sun damage. What’s more, another benefit is that thanks to the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, consuming sweet corn can also help with reducing the chances of getting something called macular degeneration which is one of the main causes of blindness in old age. So, let’s say hello to sweetcorn this summer and put away those crisps and junk food.
